How To “Curveball” A Common Issue Vegetarians & Vegans Face

Jun 20, 2022Ben Armstrong

Although vegan and vegetarian products are becoming more mainstream, many vegans still experience the difficulty of finding products which act in accordance with their diet and are beneficial towards their health.

Vegans and vegetarians are more likely to be deficient in certain vitamins due to these vitamins being absent from the majority of the foods they eat.

Below we’ve broken down the supplements that vegans and vegetarians can take and their benefits enabling them to enjoy and maintain their vegan diet but while avoiding deficiencies and the health and wellness issues that could stem from that.

1. Vegans Lack In Vitamin D

A large majority of the foods that are excluded from a vegan or vegetarian diet contain Vitamin D. Although both groups may not eat most of the foods where Vitamin D is found, it is still vital that they consume enough Vitamin D to maintain healthy bone, muscle and teeth structure as well as a high-functioning immune system to fight off infections.

Many dairy products as well as foods such as salmon, tuna, cod liver oil and beef liver contain high amounts of Vitamin D and are not found in a vegan diet.

But the issue that most vegans and vegetarians come across when looking to supplement with Vitamin D is that most products on the market are simply not compatible with the vegan diet. Vitamin D supplements are sourced from lanolin, a substance made from the grease produced by sheep's wool, which make up around 90% of Vitamin D supplements available on the market and are not suitable for either due to their traces of animal product.

The Vitamin D we produce specifically tailored for vegans and vegetarians contains no lanolin and instead is sourced from algae. Check it out here if you’re interested in keeping Vitamin D levels high while maintaining and enjoying your diet of choice.

2. Vegans Need More Iron

Vegans and vegetarians often have lower iron stores than those who eat other types of diets. High cognitive and immune function, reduction in tiredness and fatigue and the healthy transportation of oxygen through the blood are all the things that a healthy intake of Iron brings.

It is heavily present in foods such as red meat, seafood, pork and poultry which are all things that vegetarians and vegans can't eat due to their dietary requirements. Iron suitable for either group is still uncommon meaning that some people simply have to make do with having low levels of Iron which can cause them health issues such as extreme fatigue, muscular weakness as well as the feeling of chest pain and shortness of breath.

Our Iron Energy + is universally tailored for all dietary requirements, including vegans and vegetarians. We have also developed our formula by adding extra vitamins such as Vitamin C, Vitamin B12 and Folic Acid which all contributes to a healthy lifestyle, and ar sourced and produced ethically.

The Bottom Line

The bottom line is that, although many companies are evolving and becoming more inclusive to vegetarians and vegans, it is vital that we recognise the issues these groups still face in finding affordable products which are compatible with their diet and beneficial to their health.

We aim to remain at the forefront of this initiative with our vegan and vegetarian friendly products so that everyone is welcome under the Nutrition Geeks banner.
